Characteristics

Plants acaulescent proliferating from the base to form small groups up to 140 mm in diameter. Roots succulent, up to 8 mm in diameter; linear-obclavate, gradually dilating from the tip upwards. Leaves distichous at first ultimately becoming rosulate, 50-90 mm long, 20-30 mm broad at the base, patent lorate, lanceolate to triangular, falcate, with an excentric marginiform keel in the upper third, green with dense white spots in obscure transverse bands; adaxial surface flat to slightly convex, becoming channelled during the dry season; abaxial surface convex; epidermis asperulous; margin acute-tuberculate, crenulate, becoming continuous towards apex; apex acute or obtuse with an excentric mucro. Juvenile leaves lorate, apex obtuse, mucronate. Inflorescence racemose, curved and spreading, 300-480(-840) mm long, rarely with a pair of side branches; scape biconvex at the base, 4-5 mm in diameter, terete upwards. Flowers pendulous, laxly and secundly arranged in the upper half (20 to 36); bracts scarious, lanceolate, acuminate, lower bracts 4 x 7 mm; floral bracts 5 mm long; pedicels 7-10 mm long, pendulous, terete, becoming erect after anthesis. Perianth 29-33 mm long stipitate for 2-3 mm, gasteriform basally for slightly more than half its length, thence constricted to a tube 4 mm in diameter; the gasteriform portion 6-7 mm in diameter, dark reddish pink; apices white with green median striations; apices of inner segments erect, acute, becoming slightly spreading, apices of the outer segments erect. Stamens 15-20 mm long, ilaments filiform, slightly flattened; anthers 2 mm long, oblong; pollen yellow. Ovary 6-7 mm long, oblong ovoid, six-grooved; style 18 mm long, terete; stigma minute. Capsule erect, 15-18 mm long, 6 mm in diameter. Seeds oblong, 3-5 mm long, 2 mm wide. Flowering time January to February.
