Characteristics

Perennial herb, up to 80 mm high, with milky latex. Leaves in basal rosette, petiolate; blade rigid, ± coriaceous, 10-70 mm long, pinnatifid, with 2-5 pairs of narrowly oblong lobes, 2-8 mm long, apices acute, margins revolute, upper surface covered with rough short hairs, glabrescent, lower surface white-tomentose, except for midvein. Heads radiate, solitary, on nude scapes 5-80 mm long. Involucre campanulate, glabrous or rarely lightly tomentose; involucral bracts ± 3-seriate, basally connate; outer bracts linear or triangular, 1-3 mm long, margins densely ciliate with spinules; inner bracts ovate-triangular or narrowly triangular, (3-)4-6(-8) mm long, margins ± ciliate or entire, apices spinose. Flowers: ray florets white on upper surface, purple-striped on lower surface; disc florets white, Sep.-Dec., May. Fruit with cypsela turbinate, sericeous. Pappus of many, delicate scales.
