Characteristics

Perennial herb, up to 200 mm high, with milky latex. Leaves in basal rosette, petiolate; blade either linear with entire margins or pinnatifid, lobes linear or elliptic, margins revolute, upper surface harshly pubescent, glabrescent, lower surface white-tomentose. Heads radiate, solitary, on nude scapes up to 150 mm long. Involucre campanulate, glabrous or lightly tomentose; involucral bracts 2-or 3-seriate, connate basally, free part shorter than fused part, outer bracts 2-8(-10) mm long, inner bracts triangular or ovate triangular, apices obtuse to subacute, 3-5 mm long, not spinose. Flowers: upper surface of ray florets yellow or orange, lower surface with brown, grey or purple band, sometimes with black spot at base of ray floret on upper surface; disc florets yellow or orange; Jul.-Jun. Fruit with cypsela turbinate, sericeous. Pappus of many delicate scales.
