Characteristics

Plants 60-120 mm high, including flowers, base sheathed underground by a collar of dry, persistent fibrous leaf bases, and above ground by dry cataphylls. Corm ovoid, 4-6 mm diam.; tunics soft-textured, light brown, evidently concentric, becoming fibrous, not accumulating with age. Stem sometimes horizontal at ground level for a short distance, erect above, unbranched, smooth. Leaves 5 or 6, lower 4 basal, spreading horizontally and ± prostrate, blades lanceolate, leathery, 20-50 x 2.5-6.0 mm, margins moderately thickened, upper 1 or 2 cauline and shorter, sheathing for 1/2 their length. Spike erect, ± straight, 1-or 2-flowered; bracts with red tips, 7-10 mm long, outer obtuse, inner notched apically. Flowers radially symmetric with tepals ascending, pink but ± greenish in throat, unscented; perianth tube ± cylindric, 7-8 mm long; tepals subequal, oblong, ± 14 x 6 mm, ascending and forming a wide cup. Filaments equal, ± 8 mm long; anthers ± 4 mm long, sagittate at base for ± 1 mm, yellow; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite anther apices, branches ± 1.3 mm long.
