Characteristics

Plants 100-200 mm high. Corm ± ovoid-globose, ± symmetric, 7-11 mm diam.; tunics blackish, imbricate, regularly notched below into segments. Stem ± erect below, usually 1-branched, flexed above sheath of upper leaf and at base of spike. Leaves 3, linear-sword-shaped, 2-4 mm wide, (2-)4-several ribbed, ± as long as stem, lower 2 basal, uppermost largest, inserted near base or in lower part of stem, sheathing for half its length, sheath inflated and strongly ribbed. Spike inclined to ± horizontal, flexuose, (2-)4-to 10-flowered; bracts green, upper margins translucent, becoming dry and often red-flushed near apex, sometimes dry above at flowering, 10-13 mm long. Flowers zygomorphic, style and stamens declinate, held above ± deflexed lower tepal, pale yellow marked with purple to black in lower 1/3 of outer or all tepals, yellow in throat and tube, outer tepals often reddish outside; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 7-8 mm long; tepals lanceolate, 22-30 x 8-9 mm. Filaments unilateral, declinate, unequal, two longer, 15-20 mm long, one shorter, 10-14 mm long; anthers 5-6 mm long, yellow; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite upper 1/3 of anthers, branches ± 5 mm long.
