Geissorhiza bonae-spei Goldblatt

Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Iridaceae > Geissorhiza

Characteristics

Plants 120-200 mm high. Corm ± globose, asymmetric, one side obliquely flattened below; ± 8 mm diam.; tunics woody, brown, concentric, breaking vertically into irregular sections, drawn into points above. Stem ± erect, flexed above sheaths of upper 2 leaves, unbranched. Leaves 3, rarely 2, lowermost basal, longest, usually reaching to the apex of spike, linear, margins raised into wings held at right angles to blade and curving inward, thus blade evidently terete with 2 narrow longitudinal grooves, main vein hardly thickened, sticky on sheath and blade and often covered with sand, remaining leaves much shorter, uppermost leaf inserted in middle of stem, sheathing for 1/2-2/3 its length, sometimes entirely. Spike flexuose, 1-to 5-flowered; outer bract green, 25-37 mm long, often dry toward apices, inner membranous, shorter than outer. Flowers zygomorphic with stamens and style declinate, pale pink, deeper pink outside and on veins; perianth tube cylindric, 20-30 mm long, reaching apex of bracts or shortly exserted; tepals narrowly obovate, obtuse, 24-27 x 5-7 mm, inner somewhat narrower and longer than outer. Filaments unilateral, declinate, equal, 14-16 mm long; anthers 4-5 mm long, dark purple; pollen brown. Style arching below filaments, dividing opposite middle 1/3 of anthers, branches 2-3 mm long. Capsule ± cylindric, 15-20 mm long, enclosed in bracts.
