Characteristics

Plants (40-)60-180 mm high. Corm ovoid, asymmetric with oblique flat side directed downward, 4-6 mm diam.; tunics pale to dark brown, concentric, outer layers fragmenting irregularly into elliptic sections drawn into points above. Stem simple or 2-to 5-branched from base, occasionally also from cauline node. Leaves (3)4 to several, lower 2 or 3 basal, sword-shaped, 1/3-1/2 as long as stem, often prostrate, 2-9 mm wide, upper leaves cauline, progressively smaller, sometimes entirely sheathing. Spike usually 1(rarely 2 or 3)-flowered; bracts often reddish along margins, 6-10 mm long, inner usually slightly shorter than outer. Flowers actinomorphic, rotate, white, outer tepals sometimes red-flushed outside; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 2.5-5.0 mm long, flared from base; tepals obovate, (5-)8-12 x 4.5-6.0 mm. Filaments erect, equal, 5-7 mm long; anthers 2.0-3.5 mm long; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite apex of anthers. Capsules narrowly ovoid, 7-9 mm long.

Leaves 4-several, ensiform, falcate; cauline bract-like. Bracts green, margins often reddish.
