Plants 140-300 mm high. Corm ± globose, obliquely flattened below, 8-12 mm diam.; tunics blackish, imbricate, outer layers accumulating above, regularly notched below into angular segments, drawn into short bristles above. Stem often branched from uppermost leaf axil, and sometimes from base, flexed at base of spike. Leaves 2 or 3, lower 1 or 2 basal, lowermost small, often broken, or vestigial (occasionally lacking), second leaf ± as long as stem, usually terete (rarely few-ribbed), inflated or ± succulent with 4 very narrow longitudinal grooves, uppermost leaf usually cauline, inserted shortly above ground, with sheath ribbed and inflated, blade often as long as basal leaf (or leaves), ± 1.5 mm diam., terete or several-ribbed. Spike inclined, flexuose, 2-to 6-flowered; bracts often red distally, becoming dry and membranous near apex, 7-10(-15) mm long, inner ± 2 mm shorter, forked near apex. Flowers actinomorphic, ± cupped when fully open, white to creamy yellow, outer tepals sometimes flushed red to purple outside, occasionally dark coloured in throat and tube; perianth tube (3-)5-7(9) mm long, slightly shorter than, or reaching apex of bracts; tepals elliptic, 15-20(-26) x 6-9 mm, spreading. Filaments erect, equal, 5-9 mm long; anthers ± 5 mm long, creamy white or yellow. Style dividing opposite upper 1/3 to near apex of anthers, branches 2-4 mm long. Capsules globose, up to 6 mm long.
