Characteristics

Plants 12-200 mm high. Corm globose, 15-20 mm diam.; tunics woody, dark brown, concentric, breaking irregularly into sections, drawn into short points above. Stem usually inclined, flexed above sheath of uppermost leaf and at base of spike, usually unbranched. Leaves usually 3, lowermost ± basal, longest, as long or slightly exceeding spike, linear to narrowly sword-shaped, sticky and with sand adhering, margins expanded at right angles to blade, main vein also enlarged and winged, blade thus broadly 2-grooved on each surface, upper leaves shorter, uppermost inserted in middle of stem, sheathing for half its length. Spike flexuose, 1-to 3-flowered; outer bract 15-20 mm long, green, inner membranous, ± 12 mm long. Flowers zygomorphic, ± nodding, stamens and style declinate, pink with darker veins; perianth tube cylindric, ± 8 mm long, included in bracts; tepals obovate, 25-30 x 9-11(-13) mm, outer wider and shorter than inner. Filaments unilateral, declinate, equal, ± 20 mm long; anthers unilateral, ± 6.5 mm long, dark purple; pollen brown. Style arching below filaments, dividing opposite upper 1/3 of anthers, branches ± 4 mm long.
