Characteristics

Plants 120-200 mm high. Corm ± ovoid, 7 mm diam.; tunics light brown, ± imbricate, papery, notched below into narrow sections, drawn into points above. Stem simple or 1-to 3-branched, with 1 to 3 short, sheathing, scale-like bracts, flexed at base of spike, dropping in bud. Leaves 2 to 4, lowermost basal, remaining inserted above base and sheathing stem for some distance, uppermost leaf sheathing for half its length, ± 1/2 to ± as long as stem, 1.5-3.0 mm wide, margins and main vein thickened, blade thus 2-grooved on each surface, often sticky below and with soil adhering. Spike flexuose, mostly 3-to 9-flowered; bracts flushed red above, outer (6-)8-10 mm long, inner slightly shorter. Flowers actinomorphic, ± rotate, tepals spreading when fully open, tepals sometimes reflexed with age, pale to deep purple or violet, pale yellow in throat and tube; perianth tube cylindric, 4-6 mm long; tepals elliptic, 12-18(-22) x 5-6 mm. Filaments erect, unequal; two longer 10-14 mm long, shorter one 6-10 mm long; anthers, 4.0-5.5 mm long, purple; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite upper 1/3 of anthers, branches ± 4 mm long. Capsules ± globose, 5-7 mm long.
