Characteristics

Plants 250-450 mm high. Corm ovoid, 8-10 mm diam.; tunics imbricate, blackish. Stem sparsely short-hairy, usually 1-to 3-branched, with a sheathing, bract-like scale up to 10 mm long in upper 1/3. Leaves 3, lower 2 with suberect to falcate blades, upper leaf sheathing stem but free distally, blades linear, margins raised into broad wings held at right angles to blade, main vein raised and bearing winged edges parallel to blade surface, ciliate on wing edges of margins and main vein. Spike inclined, flexuose, 3-to 6-flowered; outer bract dull grey-green in bud with submembranous margins, drying pale straw with age, ± 10 mm long, inner ± opaque-membranous with 2 dark green keels, ± 2 mm shorter than outer, apically forked. Flowers actinomorphic, rotate, bright, glistening pink (turning blue on drying) with a glossy, dark purple central zone, filaments and style also dark purple; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 2.0-2.5 mm long; tepals subequal, ovate, spreading, ± 15 x 7 mm. Filaments suberect, unequal, 4-5 mm long, one ± 1 mm shorter than other two; anthers 5-8 mm long, mauve-pink to purple; pollen pale pink (yellow when dry). Style slender, short, ± 3 mm long, dividing opposite lower 1/3 of filaments, branches ascending, ± 3 mm long, extending between anthers. Capsules subglobose, 3-lobed, 6-7 mm long.
