Characteristics

Plants 30-90(-120) mm high. Corm globose, asymmetric with obliquely flattened side extending downward, 3-8 mm diam.; tunics concentric, brown, firm to softly membranous, fragmenting irregularly into sections. Stem simple or 1-to 3-branched from base or upper nodes. Leaves 3 to 6, at least lower 2 or 3 basal, often prostrate or erect to falcate, 1.5-4.5 mm wide, linear to sword-shaped, half as long as stem, upper cauline and progressively becoming shorter, uppermost often entirely sheathing. Spike usually 1(rarely 2 or 3)-flowered; bracts 4-8 mm long, becoming membranous and dry above, sometimes reddish on margins, inner ± as long as outer. Flowers rotate, pale lilac-purple, cream-coloured in throat and tube; perianth tube cylindric, 2-3 mm long, included in bracts; tepals obovate, 7-12 x 2.5-4.5 mm. Filaments equal, erect, 3-5 mm long; anthers 2.5-3.5 mm long, white; pollen yellow. Style dividing toward apex of anthers, branches up to 1.5 mm long. Capsule narrowly obovoid, 4-7 mm long. Seeds light brown, angular.
