Characteristics

Plants (150-)220-450 mm high. Corm ± ovoid, obliquely flattened below, 10-12 mm diam.; tunics blackish, imbricate, notched below into sections. Stem usually bearing 1 or more short, dry, sheathing membranous scale-like bracts, usually branched from these nodes, also sometimes from cauline leaf axil, sharply flexed above nodes and at base of spike, sheathed at base by brown, persistent, fibrous leaf bases. Leaves 3, lower 2 basal, 1/2 to ± as long as stem, uppermost leaf inserted in middle of stem, sheathing upper half of stem for 1/2-2/3 its length, blades linear to sword-shaped, 2-3 mm wide, margins thickened and extended at right angles to blade, main vein also raised and winged, and one or two pairs of secondary veins enlarged, margin edges and veins ciliate-pubescent. Spike flexed at base, flexuose, inclined, (2)3-to 6-flowered; bracts dry-membranous, brown at flowering, flexed outward in upper half, outer ± 5.5 mm long, inner slightly shorter. Flowers actinomorphic, rotate, violet or white to pale mauve, reddish purple on reverse of outer tepals; perianth tube 1-2 mm long; tepals ovate-elliptic, ± 10 x 4 mm wide. Filaments erect, equal, ± 3 mm long; anthers 3-4 mm long. Style dividing opposite upper 1/3 of anthers. Capsules globose, 4-5 mm long.
