Plants 80-150(-200) mm high. Corm ovoid, ± symmetric, 8-11 mm diam., truncate at base; tunics imbricate, blackish, notched below into regular segments. Stem simple or 1-or 2-branched, flexed above sheath of upper leaf and at base of spike, rarely with a bract-like leaf in the upper half. Leaves 3, ± sword-shaped, several ribbed, reaching to base or middle of spike, 3-6 mm wide, lower 2 basal, uppermost inserted at base or in lower part of stem, sheath inflated, often as long and wider than lower leaves. Spike inclined, flexuose 2-to 5(-7)-flowered; bracts green, becoming dry and membranous from apex, often reddish on upper margins, 9-13 mm long, inner ± as long as outer. Flowers actinomorphic, tepals widely cupped, dark blue with red centre; perianth tube ± funnel-shaped, 6-9 mm long, exserted from bracts; tepals broadly elliptic, 16-24 x 9-13 mm. Filaments erect, equal, up to 9 mm long; anthers 4.5-5.5 mm long, yellow. Style dividing near apex of anthers, branches ± 4 mm long, broad, densely hairy. Capsules ovoid-oblong, ± up to 12 mm long.
