Plants 80-200(-300) mm high. Corm globose, asymmetric with an obliquely flattened side extending shortly downward, 5-10 mm diam.; tunics concentric, dark brown, hard and woody, fragmenting irregularly into sections. Stem simple or 1-or 2-branched either from base or from upper nodes. Leaves 5 to several, at least lower 3 or 4 basal, erect to falcate, 3-6 mm wide, lanceolate to sword-shaped, typically short and seldom > 1/3 as long as stem, upper leaves cauline, progressively smaller, uppermost often entirely sheathing. Spike 2-to 5-flowered; bracts 9-12(-15) mm long, evidently green, becoming dry-membranous above, often reddish along margins, inner usually slightly shorter than outer. Flowers actinomorphic, rotate, pale pink to purple, rarely white; perianth tube ± 5 mm long, cylindric, included in bracts; tepals obovate, 13-17 x 6-7 mm. Filaments equal, 4-5 mm long; anthers 4-6 mm long; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite apex of anthers, branches 3-4 mm long. Capsules 7-9 mm long, narrowly ovoid.
