Characteristics

Plants 100-180(-300) mm high. Corm globose, asymmetric with obliquely flattened side extending downward, 5-8 mm diam.; tunics concentric, dark brown, outer layers sometimes ± papery and soft, fragmenting irregularly into sections. Stem simple or more often 2-to 5-branched from base and upper nodes. Leaves 3 to 5, usually erect, lower 2 or 3 basal, largest, 2.5-6.0 mm wide, sword-shaped to linear, ± 1/2-2/3 as long as stem, upper leaves smaller, sometimes entirely sheathing, uppermost often bract-like. Spike (1-)3-to 7-flowered; bracts 6-8 mm long, ± membranous above, often reddish on margins, inner ± as long as outer. Flowers rotate, either blue to purple or white with outer tepals pink outside; perianth tube 4-5(-6) mm long, cylindric, reaching ± to apex of bracts; tepals obovate, 8-11(-15) x 5-6 mm wide. Filaments equal, 4-6(-8) mm long; anthers 3-4 mm long; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite apex of anthers, branches ± 2 mm long. Capsules obovoid, 5-7 mm long.
