Plants mostly 150-300 mm high. Corm ± globose, somewhat asymmetric with one side flattened obliquely below, ± 10 mm diam.; tunics dark brown, imbricate, notched below into ± regular sections, drawn into points above. Stem minutely velvety, 1-or 2-branched. Leaves 3 or 4, lower 2 basal, upper 1 or 2 cauline, uppermost (when present) smallest, becoming scale-like, blades sword-shaped, reaching to ± base of spike, 2-3 mm wide, margins lightly raised and extending at right angles to blade, main vein raised and winged, velvety on edges of margins, main and secondary veins. Spike 1-to 4-flowered; bracts becoming dry from apex, turning brown above, outer 12-18(-21) mm long, inner enclosed by much longer outer bracts. Flowers salver-shaped, deep blue with pale throat and tube; perianth tube cylindric, widening near mouth, 18-25 mm long; tepals elliptic, 16-20 x ± 3 mm. Filaments suberect, equal, 8-10 mm long; anthers 3-4 mm long, yellow; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite lower 1/3 of anthers, branches ± 2.5 mm long, reaching only to middle of anthers. Capsules ellipsoid, 6-9 mm long.

Cormous geophyte, 150-300 mm tall, tunics woody, imbricate, stem velvety. Leaves sword-shaped, margins and midrib lightly thickened. Flowers in a few-flowered spike, blue-violet, with white at tepal bases and in tube, perianth tube 18-25 mm, slightly longer than the tepals, tepals spreading, stamens usually slightly unequal.
