Characteristics

Plants 80-180 mm high. Corm globose, ± symmetric, 7-10 mm diam., truncate at base; tunics imbricate, blackish, layers notched below into regular segments. Stem flexed above sheath of upper leaf and at base of spike, rarely with a bract-like leaf in upper half, simple or 1-to 3-branched. Leaves 3, lower two basal, reaching to base or middle of spike, 2-4 mm wide, sword-shaped, conspicuously several ribbed, lowermost smallest, uppermost leaf inserted at base or in lower part of stem, sheathing and inflated below, also several ribbed, longer than lower leaves. Spike secund, flexuose, 2-to 6-flowered; bracts green, becoming dry and membranous from apex, often reddish on upper margin, 6-12(-15) mm long, inner ± as long but narrower. Flowers actinomorphic, ± rotate when fully open, deep blue with a red centre sometimes edged with narrow white band; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 2-3 mm long, included in bracts; tepals obovate, 14-16 x 9-10 mm. Filaments erect, equal, 6.5-8.0 mm long; anthers ± 4.5 mm long, articulated and horizontal, lying over style branches, purple; pollen brown. Style dividing near anther bases, branches 2.0-3.5 mm long, broad, flat, evidently smooth, concealed by anthers. Capsules globose, up to 16 mm long.
