Characteristics

Plants 180-300 mm high. Corm globose, symmetric, 5-9 mm diam., usually with numerous cormlets around base; tunics membranous-papery, ± imbricate, incised below, light brown, outer layers becoming irregularly broken. Stem bearing 1 or more green, sheathing bracts in upper half, often branched in upper axils, sometimes also from axil of uppermost leaf, flexed at base of spike. Leaves usually 3(4), linear, plane, margins and midrib slightly raised, occasionally sparsely ciliate on edges, 2-4 mm wide, usually ± as long as stem, lower 2 (or 3) leaves basal, uppermost inserted in lower 1/3 to middle of stem, sheathing below. Spike (2)3-to 7-flowered, flexuose; bracts 7-10 mm long, green, membranous on upper margins, occasionally ± dry above, rarely ± tawny. Flowers actinomorphic, rotate, blue to violet (or blue-mauve), usually pale in tube with throat ringed with darker colour; perianth tube 3-5 mm long, included in bracts; tepals obovate, 12-17(-20) x 5.0-6.5 mm. Filaments erect, unequal, two longer 8-10(-12) mm long, shorter one 4-6 mm long; anthers 3.5-5.0 mm long. Style dividing near or beyond tips of anthers, branches recurved.
