Plants 200-450 mm high. Corm ovoid, tapering above, 6-8 mm diam.; tunics brown, woody to ± papery in texture, incised below into regular sections. Stem 2-to 4-branched (rarely simple), with scale-like bracts subtending branches. Leaves 2 or 3(4), lower 1 or 2 basal, half as long to ± as long as stem, linear, 1.2-2.5 mm wide, margins and main vein thickened, narrowly 2-grooved on each surface, upper leaf (rarely two) cauline, sheathing stem below. Spike inclined, flexuose, few-to 11-flowered; bracts becoming dry and membranous from tips, outer 3.5-5.5 mm long, inner slightly shorter. Flowers rotate, actinomorphic, blue, purple, or violet (fading to pink then white when dry); perianth tube funnel-shaped, 2-3 mm long; tepals obovate-elliptic, (5-)7-9 x 3.3-4.5 mm. Filaments erect, unequal, two longer 3-4 mm long, shorter one 2.5-3.0 mm long; anthers 2.2-3.5 mm long, yellow. Style dividing opposite upper 1/3 of anthers, branches ± 1.5 mm long. Capsules globose to oblong, 3.5-5.0 mm long.
