Characteristics

Plants 150-200 mm high. Corm globose, ± asymmetric with an oblique flat side, 8-10 mm diam.; tunics concentric, dark brown, woody, fragmenting irregularly into sections. Stem simple or 1-branched from upper node. Leaves 3 to 5, erect to falcate, lower 2 or 3 basal, upper cauline and progressively smaller, sometimes uppermost bract-like, 3-6 mm wide, sword-shaped to ± linear, longest usually reaching to ± base of spike or shorter. Spike 1-to 3-flowered; bracts 14-18(-25) mm long, becoming membranous above, often reddish on margins, inner equal to or somewhat shorter than outer. Flowers zygomorphic, tepals held ± vertically, whitish inside with red markings near base of tepals, flushed reddish outside; perianth tube 8-10 mm long, cylindric, initially included in bracts, or becoming shortly exserted; tepals obovate to elliptic, 22-32 x 10-15 mm wide. Filaments equal, unilateral and declinate, 12-20 mm long; anthers 6-8 mm long; pollen yellow. Style dividing opposite apex of anthers, branches 3-4 mm long.

Bracts herbaceous, margins ± reddish. Inflorescence a 1-3-flowered spike; flowers whitish inside with red markings near base of tepals, zygomorphic; perianth tube 8-10 mm long, cylindric; tepals reddish on reverse, oblong to obovate. Stamens declinate, 12-20 mm long; anthers 6-8 mm long; pollen yellow. Ovary 4 mm long; style dividing at apex of anthers, branches 3-4 mm long, recurved. Flowering time Aug., Sept.
