Characteristics

Plants (100-)150-200 mm high. Corm globose, asymmetric, flattened below on one side, 12-18 mm diam.; tunics concentric, woody, dark brown, breaking vertically into irregular sections, drawn into cusps ± 15 mm long above. Stem suberect, flexed above sheaths of upper 2 leaves, unbranched. Leaves usually 3, lowermost basal, longest, usually ± straight, lanceolate, usually slightly longer than stem, 4-6 mm wide, sticky below and on margins and midrib usually with sand adhering, margins enlarged and extending at right angles to blade, main vein also enlarged and winged, blade thus with 2 wide grooves on each surface, remaining leaves much shorter, uppermost inserted in middle of stem, sheathing for ± half their length. Spike flexuose, 1-to 4-flowered; outer bracts (20-)25-40 mm long, green, inner much shorter, concealed by outer. Flowers zygomorphic, with stamens and style declinate, tepals pale or deep pink with darker veins; perianth tube cylindric, 24-32 mm long, usually shortly exserted from bracts; tepals obovate, 35-40 x 9-15 mm, outer shorter and broader than inner. Filaments unilateral, declinate, equal, ± 20 mm long; anthers 6-7 mm long, purple; pollen brown. Style arching below filaments, dividing opposite or shortly beyond anther tips, branches ± 3.5 mm long.
