Characteristics

Plants 80-200 mm high. Corm ovoid, truncate at base, 7-10 mm diam.; tunics dark brown to black, imbricate, outer layers notched below into regular truncate sections. Stem suberect, densely minutely puberulous, simple or with 1(2) branch(es), with short sheathing scale-like bract in upper 1/3. Leaves 3, lower 2 basal, lowermost longest, shorter to slightly longer than stem, blades linear, mostly 1.5-2.0 mm wide, margins raised and extended at right angles to blade, main vein thickened, blade thus narrowly 2-grooved on each surface, edges of margins and midrib minutely ciliate, slightly sticky and with sand adhering, uppermost leaf inserted shortly above ground, sheathing below, with inflated sheath. Spike flexuose, flexed at base and inclined, mostly 2-to 5-flowered; bracts initially green, becoming dry and brown from apex, outer 16-20(-25) mm long, inner 8-16 mm long. Flower zygomorphic, glossy deep blue, darker toward base of tepals, yellow-green in throat, tepals widely cupped and tilted 30°, stamens unilateral and declinate, held above lowermost tepal; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 2-4 mm long; tepals broadly ovate, 15-22 x 9-14 mm, inner 8-12 mm wide. Filaments equal, unilateral, declinate, ± 5 mm long; anthers 7-8 mm long, horizontal; pollen red-brown. Style ± 10.5 mm long, lying beneath stamens, dividing opposite anther tips, branches 2 mm long. Capsules globose, ± 6-7 x 5 mm, enclosed in bracts.
