Characteristics

Plants 120-300 mm high. Corm ± ovoid, obliquely flattened below, 10-15 mm diam.; tunics blackish, imbricate, notched below into sections. Stem with a short, dry, membranous, sheathing scale-like bract in upper 1/3, usually branched at this node, also sometimes at axil of cauline leaf, flexed at nodes and base of spike, sheathed below by a fibrous collar of persistent leaf bases. Leaves 3, lower 2 basal, uppermost cauline, inserted in middle of stem, 1/2 to ± as long as stem, 3-6 mm wide, margins thickened and extending at right angles to blade, main vein also raised and winged and at least two other pairs of veins enlarged, ciliate to pubescent on veins and margin edges. Spike flexed at base, inclined, flexuose, (2)3-flowered; bracts ± dry, membranous and brown at flowering time, outer 6-10 mm long, flexed outward in upper half, inner slightly shorter. Flowers actinomorphic, rotate, violet, pale in throat and tube; perianth tube 2-3 mm long; tepals ovate-elliptic, 12-17 x 6-7 mm. Filaments erect, equal, ± 4 mm long; anthers 4-5 mm long. Style dividing opposite upper 1/3 of anthers, becoming decumbent. Capsules globose, ± 4 mm long.
