Characteristics

Plants 250-350 mm high. Corm globose, tapering above, 7 mm diam.; tunics light brown, ± imbricate, papery in texture, cut below into narrow sections and drawn into points above. Stem simple or 1-to 3-branched, flexed at base of spike, bearing in addition to a cauline leaf, 1(2) short, sheathing scale-like bracts, flexed at base of spike. Leaves (2)3, lower 2 (or 1) basal, 1/2 to occasionally ± as long as stem, linear, 2-3 mm wide, with slightly thickened to winged margins and main vein, broadly 2-grooved on each surface, somewhat sticky below and with sand adhering, uppermost leaf cauline, sheathing for 1/2 its length. Spike nodding in bud, later becoming straight, 3-to 8-flowered, flexuose; bracts green, flushed red above, recurved above at flowering, outer 7-8 mm long, inner slightly shorter. Flowers actinomorphic, rotate, pale mauve to nearly white (usually white when dry); perianth tube ± cylindric, 1.5-2.0 mm long; included in bracts; tepals elliptic, 15-18 x 5-7 mm. Filaments suberect, unequal, two longer 5-6 mm long, shorter one 3-4 mm long; anthers 3.5-5.0 mm long, yellow. Style dividing opposite apex of anthers, branches ± 2.5 mm long.
