Characteristics

Plants 70-150 mm high. Corm ovoid, symmetric, truncate at base, 5-8 mm diam.; tunics imbricate, blackish, outer layers regularly notched below into truncate sections. Stem suberect below, inclined above, minutely puberulous, flexed above leaf sheaths, simple or 1-or 2-branched from axils of cauline or basal leaf. Leaves 3 or 4, lower 2 or 3 basal, 2 lowermost narrowed below and petiole-like, third leaf sheathing base of stem, uppermost leaf cauline, partly sheathing stem, sometimes ± scale-like), blades sword-shaped to lanceolate, plane, shorter to slightly longer than stem, 1.5-10.0 mm wide, often sticky below and with soil adhering. Spike flexed at base, inclined, flexuose, 1(2)-flowered; bracts green below, brown and dry above, outer 10-18 mm long, inner slightly shorter. Flowers zygomorphic, half nodding, stamens unilateral, declinate, held above lowermost tepal, tepals white with maroon-red to brownish markings toward base; perianth tube funnel-shaped, 4-5 mm long; tepals subequal, ovate, 18-22 x 10-13 mm, inner 8-11 mm wide. Filaments equal, unilateral, declinate, 10-12 mm long; anthers 3.0-4.5 mm long, ± erect, dark purple; pollen dark red-brown. Style arching below stamens, branches ± 5 mm long. Capsules ovate-oblong, 6-8 mm long, enclosed in bracts.
