Characteristics

Roots 1-2.5(-3) mm wide. Crown vertical. Leaves rather few, 5-27 cm long, 0.5-2 cm wide. Petiole 2-14 cm long, 1-2.5 mm wide, more or less winged, passing more or less directly into the decurrent lamina. Blade 30-195 mm long, rather thick and rigid, lanceolate, oblanceolate or narrowly elliptic; apex obtuse or acute, base decurrent in the petiole; blade light green to yellow green, sometimes tinged purple, glabrous or especially when young sparsely and softly pubescent with light hairs; margin entire or rarely obscurely denticulate; midrib prominent, lateral veins hardly visible. Dark glandular hairs ± abundant on the petiole, blade, scape and involucral bracts. Scape solitary, 13-49(-56) cm long, 1-3 mm wide. Involucral bracts 4-15 mm long, 0.5-2.5 mm wide, lanceolate or broadly so, tapering. Heads campanulate, 9-16 mm long, 15-23 mm wide. Outer ray florets yellow or white, rarely tinged mauve or lilac, usually red below; tube 3-5 mm long, lower limb 6-12 mm long, up to 3 mm wide, upper limb 1-2.5 mm long, style 1-4.5 mm long. Inner ray florets few; tube 4-6 mm long, limbs 1-3 mm long, the lower limb sometimes protruded to 4 mm. Disc florets purplish, red, mauve or yellow; tube 4-6 mm long, the limbs 1-3 mm long. Achenes 4-6.5 mm long, only obscurely to shortly beaked on the few (somewhat immature) specimens studied. Pappus violet-purple, pinkish-brown (fide Hilliard) or yellow-white, sometimes with more than one colour on the same floret.
