The leaves first developing remain sinuate, while the following ones usually are pinnatifid when fully developed. Upper surface dark green, lower one waxy green, varying from thinly tomentose on the lower surface to almost glabrous when mature. Scapes one to several, 13-68.5 cm long, 2-5 mm wide, narrowing toward the apex. Involucral bracts 4-17(-21) mm long, 1-3 mm wide, long acuminate-tapering. Heads campanulate, very large, 10-22 mm long, 20-48 mm wide. Ray florets 30-35, very prominent, yellow, orange, orange-red, scarlet, red, dark red, white or pink, more dull below. Lower limb very long, 16-41 mm, 1-7 mm wide, tube 4-9 mm long, upper limb 2-4 mm long, style a few mm longer. Inner ray florets quite numerous, often seemingly in two rows, clearly like the outer florets, but with the lower limb at most only slightly protruding; tube 3-7 mm long, lower limb 2-3 mm long, upper limb 1-3 mm long. Tube of disc florets 3-8 mm long, lower limb 1-3 mm long, upper limb 0.75-2 mm long. Both inner rays and disc florets coloured like the outer rays or more dull. Achenes 6-13 mm long, including a more or less prominent, 2-6.5 mm long beak, pubescent-pilose. Pappus creamy white to dirty white.
