Characteristics

Bulb ovoid, about 2-3 cm in diam., extending into a wide neck formed of old thin brown scales and basal truncate, membranous pink leaf-sheaths without a lamina. Leaves 3-10, usually spreading, forming lax spiral curls, linear, up to about 10 cm long and 3 mm broad, densely villous with long complex bundles of hairs which are fused near the base to form a broad foot. Flower pink or white, fragrant; perianth tube cylindrical up to 10 cm long, limb regular, spreading to reflexed, segments broadly ovate to lanceolate, 2.5-4 cm long, 7-10 mm broad, apex minutely and retrorsely caudate. Stamens 6, simple, anthers curling up with age; pollen 1-2 celled. Style exserted above the anthers, stigma with 3 short swollen obtuse lobes. Fruit a berry 'thin, cylindrical, up to 8 cm long and 5 mm wide, white, transparent, seeds red' fide Marloth.
