Characteristics

Foliage leaves 4–5, the lower 3–4 basal or nearly so and reaching to at least the base of the spike, sometimes shortly exceeding it, 7–12 mm wide, narrowly lanceolate to more or less linear, firm textured with the midrib and margins slightly thickened; the upper 1–2 leaves cauline and much shorter than the basal.

Flowers white, the lower tepals each with a dark-red to violet spade-shaped mark in the lower midline and usually with dark streaks in the throat; perianth tube (4.2)5–9 cm long, cylindric below, the upper part curved outwards and flared, c. 12 mm long; tepals subequal, 3–3.5 × 2–2.2 cm, broadly obovate.
Corms c. 15 mm in diameter; tunics reddish-brown, of brittle papery layers, the outer becoming irregularly broken, rarely subfibrous.
Filaments 22–28 mm long, exserted for 5–8 mm; anthers 9–12 mm long, apices with obscure appendages less than 0.2 mm long.
Spike 3–8-flowered; bracts green, becoming dry and brown above, 4–5 cm long, the inner slightly shorter than the outer.
Style dividing just beyond the anther apices, style branches c. 4.5 mm long.
Stem usually inclined or drooping, unbranched.
Capsules 30–35 mm long, oblong-ellipsoid.
Plants 60–90 cm high.
