Flowers bright-red, the lower tepals each with a median white to yellow streak, the marks on the lower lateral tepals spathulate and widest near the tepal apices; perianth tube c. 35 mm long, the lower part 18–25 mm long, slender and cylindric, the upper part 8–10 mm long, funnel-shaped; tepals unequal, lanceolate, the uppermost 45–55 × 15–20 mm, larger than the others and arched over the stamens, the lower 3 tepals united for 10–12 mm, c. 40 mm long, nearly horizontal or dipping towards the ground, extending as far outward as the upper or slightly further.
Foliage leaves 4–5, the lower 3 more or less basal and longer than the others, reaching to about the base of the spike, 8–18(24) mm wide, lanceolate to linear, the upper 2 leaves cauline and sheathing in the lower half, fairly soft-textured, the midrib and margins not thickened.
Filaments 35–40 mm long, exserted 20–25 mm; anthers 10–12 mm long, reaching to about the upper third of the uppermost tepal, with a slender often inconspicuous apiculum 0.5–1 mm long.
Corms 15–25 mm in diameter; tunics initially membranous, becoming more or less fibrous and matted with age, fibres brown, enclosing numerous small cormlets.
Spike 5–9-flowered; bracts green and soft-textured, the outer sometimes flushed red, 25–40(50) mm long, the inner two-thirds as long as the outer.
Style dividing opposite to or beyond the anther apices, style branches c. 4 mm long, wider and channelled above.
Capsules 18–27 mm long, ellipsoid.
Plants 45–80 cm high.
Stem unbranched.
