Characteristics

Plants 50-75 cm. high.. Corm globose, ± 1.5 cm. in diameter, tunics coriaceous, the outer layers breaking into medium to coarse vertical fibres, brown.. Foliage leaves 6-8, the lower 2-3 basal and largest, reaching shortly above the base of the spike, the upper leaves cauline and progressively reduced in size, narrowly lanceolate to sublinear, 7-12 mm. at the widest, usually densely (sometimes lightly) pubescent, the margins and midrib lightly thickened.. Stem unbranched, glabrous.. Spike 9-14-flowered; bracts 16-20(-25) cm. long, evidently green below, becoming dry and light brown above, narrowly lanceolate, attenuate, the inner ± 2/3 as long as the outer.. Flowers white to cream (sometimes flushed with pink) or light purple, the lower lateral or all 3 lower tepals each with a broad yellow median streak, the lower part of the tube dark purple; perianth-tube ± 1 cm. long, obliquely infundibuliform; tepals unequal, the dorsal ± 2 × 1.2 cm., largest, obovate, the lower 3 ± 20 × 8 mm., spreading ± horizontally, lanceolate, narrowed into claws below.. Filaments ± 1.2 cm. long, exserted for ± 7 mm.; anthers ± 9 mm. long.. Style dividing opposite the apex of the anthers, the branches ± 2.5 mm. long.. Capsules unknown.. Fig. 12/1.
