Characteristics

Plants 30-60 cm. high.. Corm (1-)2-3.5 cm. in diameter, tunics ± coriaceous or fragmenting into coarse to medium textured fibres, sometimes entirely fibrous, brownish.. Foliage leaves 2-3, entirely sheathing or with short blades 1-8(-12) cm. long, occasionally imbricate, blades lanceolate, usually narrowly so, margins and midribs hyaline and usually lightly thickened (foliage leaves on separate shoots not known and probably not produced); leaves of non-flowering plants not known.. Stem erect, unbranched, usually straight.. Spike 2-8-flowered; bracts 1.8-2.5 cm. long, green or sometimes membranous or dry above, the inner somewhat shorter than the outer and apically bifid.. Flowers white to cream or yellow, sometimes flushed pinkish or light mauve especially on the upper 3 tepals, or rarely uniformly mauve, pink or light orange, lacking contrasting markings on the lower tepals; perianth-tube 7-8 mm. long, curving outward between the bracts, widening near the mouth; tepals nearly equal, 20-25 × 7-8 mm., directed forwards, weakly curving outward distally, hardly or not at all narrowed below into claws.. Filaments 4-5 mm. long, usually included in the tube (exserted for up to 1 mm.); anthers 7-9 mm. long, sometimes the bases included for up to 2 mm.. Style dividing toward the anther-apices, the branches 3.5-4 mm. long.. Capsules obovoid, 1-1.2 cm. long.. Fig. 13/6-8.
