Characteristics

Plants 40-80 cm. high.. Corms 1.5-2.5 cm. in diameter, tunics initially membranous, becoming fibrous and matted with age, fibres brown, enclosing numerous small cormlets.. Leaves 4-5, fairly soft-textured, the midrib and margins not thickened, the lower 3 ± basal and usually longest, lanceolate to linear, reaching to ± the base of the spike, 8-18(-24) mm. wide, the upper 2 leaves cauline and sheathing in the lower half.. Stem erect, unbranched, 3-4 mm. in diameter at the base of the spike.. Spike erect, (2-)5-9-flowered; bracts pale green and soft-textured, the outer sometimes flushed red, 2.5-4(-5) cm. long, the inner 2/3 as long as the outer.. Flowers pale to deep pink, the lower tepals each with a median white to yellow streak outlined in red or purple, the mark broadest in the centre and largest on the lower laterals; perianth-tube narrowly funnel-shaped, the lower part, 3-4 mm. long, slender and cylindric, the wider upper part ± 2 cm. long; tepals lanceolate, subequal or the dorsal somewhat longer than the others, 3.8-4.5 cm. long, the dorsal ± horizontal, 1.5-2 cm. wide, the lower 3 joined for ± 5 mm., tilted slightly below horizontal, 8-12 mm. wide, in profile usually slightly exceeding than the dorsal.. Filaments 1.5-2 cm. long, exserted (3-)5-10(-15) mm. from the tube; anthers 1-1.5 cm. long, reaching to ± the middle of the dorsal tepal, with apiculate appendage ± 1.5 mm. long.. Style arched over the stamens, dividing at or beyond the anther-apices, the branches ± 4 mm. long, wider and channelled above.. Capsules ± ellipsoid, ± 1.5 cm. long.. Fig. 17/1-2.
