Characteristics

Plants villous to pubescent on cataphylls, leaf sheaths, often blades, and stems and bracts. Leaves usually reaching to ± base of spike, lanceolate to sword-shaped, 8-16 mm wide, margins, main and other veins lightly to moderately thickened. Flowers usually yellowish green, irregularly flecked or streaked with purple, sometimes creamy yellow or green, rarely reddish, lower tepals with cream-coloured nectar guides in lower half.

Leaves narrow and exceeding spikes, in a lax fan, usually some distance above ground; blade with a prominent midrib, sometimes secondary veins too. Flowers: in a 12-20-flowered spike; bracteoles with free margins; perianth cream-coloured, yellow or in various shades of pink, lavender-coloured or wine-red, plain or faintly spotted; Dec.-Feb.
