Characteristics

Twigs terete or elliptical in section, glabrous; bark grey-brown, not peeling.. Leaves opposite or subopposite; petiole 5–8 mm. long; lamina thick and fleshy, yellow-green, tinged reddish when young, elliptic to broadly ovate, 3.5–9 cm. long, 2–5.5 cm. wide, bluntly pointed to rounded at the apex, obliquely cuneate to rounded and slightly decurrent at the base; main lateral nerves 6–8 pairs, second to fourth strongly ascending, the upper ones more spreading.. Umbels 3–6, mostly at older leafless nodes; peduncle 3–8 mm. long; pedicels 3–6, 3–6 mm. long; bract-cup 0.5 mm. long, with a triangular or bifid limb 1–3 mm. long.. Receptacle 0.7–1.2 mm. long.. Calyx 1.2–2 mm. long.. Corolla bright deep pink, the apical swelling turning black in ripe buds, the lobes green inside, 3.5–4.5 cm. long; apical swelling subhemispherical, pentagonal, reduplicate to narrowly 5-winged, the wings extending down the tube, 5–7 mm. across, 4–5 mm. tall; basal swelling slight.. Inner anther-thecae 5 mm. long; outer ones 4 mm. long.. Style-constriction 5 mm. long; stigma peltate, 3 mm. across.. Berry mauvish, turbinate, to 12 mm. across.. Fig. 12/10.
