Characteristics

Liana. Leaves obovate, cuneate, leathery, up to 16 by 6 cm, brown when dry; secondary nerves bent, indistinctly joining, tertiary ones inconspicuous, upper leaf surface transversely striped by fibres. ♂ Inflorescences axillary, erect, once branched, thick, 3 cm long, 7 mm broad. ♂ Flowers broadly obconic; sterile ♀ flowers ovate. ♂ Inflorescences unknown. Internodes of fruit-bearing axis 1½ cm long, 4 mm thick; unpollinated flowers 6 in each collar, ovate. Fruits wine-red, obovate-el-lipsoid, not shining, 4½ by 2½ cm; outer envelop fleshy, middle one woody and fibrous, inner one papery. Seed oblong, striped, 24 mm long.
