Characteristics

Calyx tube 6–13 mm long, not articulated, densely tomentose, lower part with erect, stiff hairs c. 2 mm long; lobes 3–5.5 × 2–3.5 mm, elliptic or obovate, apex rounded, retuse, sericeous pubescent outside at the base and along the midrib with c. 1 mm long hairs, glabrous above, bright yellow, later brownish.

Leaves alternate, persistent at the top of the branches, sessile, 18–43 × 4–9 mm, semi-coriaceous, narrowly elliptic, oblong or narrowly obovate, gradually attenuate at the base, acute to acuminate at the apex with ± hardened tip, glabrous, glaucous; midrib prominent, especially beneath.
Bracts 8–10, imbricate, 12–20 × 6–10 mm, ovate, acuminate, papyraceous, finely nerved, green, gradually reddish or brownish, glabrous or sometimes slightly pilose at the apex beneath, persistent.
Inflorescence a terminal head, 15–20 mm in diameter, 20–55-flowered; peduncle c. 5 mm long; uppermost leaves reaching the level of, or extending over the top of the head.
Ovary 4–7 mm long, slightly puberulous at top; style 4–6 mm long; stigma spherical, fimbriate; disk with 4–5 membranous lobes, 0.2–0.3 mm high.
Branches terete, glabrous, slightly striate, marked by the somewhat raised scars left by the fallen leaves, greyish-brown or black.
Stamens 10, in two rows, the upper one semi-exserted; anthers 1.5 mm long, subsessile.
Fruit included within the persistent base of the calyx tube.
Flowers 5-merous, yellow; pedicels 2–4 mm long, pubescent.
Seed 3–4 × c. 1.5 mm, the outer coat granulated.
