Leaves alternate, sessile or with petiole 0.5–1 mm long; lamina (7)12–22(32) × (1)2–6(9) mm, linear, elliptic to narrowly obovate, obtuse to acute at both ends, glaucous, light green or sometimes reddish, papyraceous, sometimes marked with minute dots, glabrous, or rarely with scattered hairs when young; midrib visible on the lower surface.
Calyx tube (6)8–12(14) mm long, glabrous to densely pubescent above the articulation, glabrous below; lobes (1)2–3(4)× 0.5–2 mm, oblong to ovate, obtuse or acute, glabrous or hairy on the outside.
Bracts (4)5–6(8), yellowish-green, often reddish to dark brown, 4–8(10) × 2–7 mm, elliptic to broadly oblong or subrotund, acute or rounded, leaf-like or scarious, glabrous, persistent.
Inflorescence a terminal or axillary 4–25(40)-flowered head, 10–20 mm in diameter, sometimes slightly nodding; peduncle 5–40 mm long, glabrous.
Perennial herb or undershrub, unbranched to much branched, 10 cm to 1 m high or more, with a woody rhizome often abnormally thickened.
Flowers 4(rarely 5)-merous, orange-yellow, pink to red or brownish; pedicel 0.2–1.5 mm long, with a brush of silky hairs 3–4 mm long.
Stems (often numerous, ± woody at base) and branches glabrous, green to reddish or flushed purple, often brownish.
Ovary glabrous, 1–1.5 mm long; disk minute, cup-shaped, ± lobed; style 2–4 mm long, excentric; stigma papillate.
Petals 0.7–1.5 × 0.2–1.2 mm, linear, obovate to spathulate, often ± emarginate, fleshy, sometimes glandular.
Stamens subsessile; anthers 0.5–1 mm long.
Seed 2–3 × 1–1.5 mm.
