Characteristics

Shrub to 3 m. Leaves scattered, narrowly lanceolate, minutely warty, pilose on margins and beneath when young; involucral leaves similar. Flowers 3-5 at branch tips, grey-lilac to dull purple, sometimes cream-coloured, hypanthium densely hairy above, sepals reflexed, hairy above and beneath, petaloid floral scales in 4 groups of ± 3, slender, fleshy segments forming a continuous ring interspersed with hairs, yellow, upper row of stamens abortive.

Leaves alternate, imbricate, linear, convex, obtuse, at first pilose, finally glabrous, upper purplish, with white hairs. Flowers many, terminal. Hypanthium hirsute-tomentose; sepals lanceolate, acute. Petaloid floral outgrowths many. Stamens 4. Flowering time June-Nov.
