A much-branched shrub up to 12 ft. high; branches virgate, slender, glabrous, reddish when young; leaves decussate, longer than the internodes, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, acute, 5 lin. long, 2 lin. wide, quite glabrous, 1-nerved beneath, the upper often reddish especially at the margin; flowers in clusters of 4-6 at the branches; calyx pubescent outside; tube 8 lin. long, articulated below, slightly widened upwards, ribbed; lobes obovate, obtuse, 1.5 lin. long, 1 lin. wide; petals 4, fleshy, 2-lobed in front, 1 lin. long; anthers 1/3 lin. long, much narrower than the petals, all included; ovary 1/4 lin. long, compressed, densely hairy at the top; style half as long as the calyx-tube; stigma capitate.

Hypanthium pubescent outside; tube articulated below, slightly widened upwards, ribbed; sepals obovate, obtuse. Petaloid floral glands 4, fleshy, 2-lobed in front. Anthers narrower than floral glands, all included. Ovary compressed, densely hairy at top. Style half as long as hypanthium tube. Stigma capitate. Flowering time Aug.-May.
