Perennial shrub or dwarf shrub, 0.01-2.40 m high; much branched; branches virgate, slender, glabrous, reddish when young. Leaves decussate, longer than internodes, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, acute, quite glabrous, 1-nerved beneath, upper often reddish especially at margins. Flowers in clusters of 4-6 at branches. Hypanthium pubescent outside; tube articulated below, slightly widened upwards, ribbed; sepals obovate, obtuse. Petaloid floral glands 4, fleshy, 2-lobed in front. Anthers narrower than floral glands, all included. Ovary compressed, densely hairy at top. Style half as long as hypanthium tube. Stigma capitate. Flowering time Aug.-May.
Erect, willowy shrub to 3 m. Leaves opposite-decussate, oblong-lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate; involucral leaves similar but crimson-edged. Flowers 4-6 at branch tips, pale yellow, hypanthium silky villous, ribbed, petaloid floral scales 4, fleshy, pale yellow (brown when dry).
