Characteristics

Perennial, dwarf shrub, up to 0.5 m high; stems slightly branched, at first hirsute, at length glabrous or nearly so, reddish brown. Leaves alternate, usually oblong, acute, entire, densely long-silky beneath, more sparingly so above. Flowers in short, terminal spike. Hypanthium: urceolate, not expanded in upper part, densely hairy outside, cylindrical above; sepals 4, oblong, rounded at apex, all alike. Stamens 8 in 2 series. Anthers dark brown, subsessile. Ovary ovoid, compressed, with terminal tuft of straight hairs. Style excentric, filiform, reaching to lower anthers. Stigma slightly enlarged. Flowering time Dec.-Feb.
