Characteristics

Tree to 30 m high. Shoots appressed-pubescent; branchlets glabrescent. Leaves: petiole 3–10 mm long; lamina elliptic to narrowly obovate, 5–12 cm long, 2–5 cm wide, shortly attenuate, slightly recurved on margins, obtuse or acute, glabrous above, glabrescent below; secondary veins 9–12 pairs. Flowers solitary, rarely paired, axillary or ramal, unpleasantly scented; pedicel 15–20 mm long, glabrescent; bracts 3–5, ovate, 1 mm long, caducous. Sepals triangular, 7–8 mm long, 6–6.5 mm wide, acute, glabrescent. Petals 6 in 2 whorls of 3, green to yellow to orange or pinkish brown. Outer petals ovate, laterally recurved, apically incurved, 25–35 mm long, 16–21 mm wide, appressed-puberulous. Inner petals rhombic, 10–12 mm long, 7–9 mm wide, concave and glabrous inside, appressed-puberulous outside, cohering along the margins to form a cap over the stamens and ovaries (Zich et al. 2020). Stamens c. 75–80, 1.4 mm long; anther connective ± swollen at apex and concealing the anthers (Zich et al. 2020). Carpels 9–13; ovary 2.5–2.7 mm long, glabrous; ovules 5–7; stigma with adaxial slit, hispid. Apocarps ellipsoidal or obloid, 3–6 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide, obtuse or apiculate, green to brown; stipe 2–6 mm long (on very shortly stalked apocarps the stipe may appear ± absent). Seeds (1) 2–6, obloid or ovoid, c. 15–20 mm long, red-brown.
