Characteristics

Shrub or small tree up to 8 m tall; young branches ± glabrous with a few scattered stellate hairs.. Leaves rhombic to elliptic-rhombic, 1.8–11.5 cm long, 0.8–5.5 cm wide, widest just below the middle and narrowing towards the slightly acuminate apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, margin crenate to serrate, glabrous above and beneath; petiole 2–4 mm long, with a few scattered minute stellate hairs; stipules triangular, up to 1.5 mm long.. Inflorescence a 1–3-flowered axillary cyme with peduncle ± absent so appearing as if flowers are solitary; pedicel 9–13 mm long, very slender, green to brownish tomentellous with 3 persistent small bracts ± 1 mm long at base.. Flowers white; sepals 6–8 mm long; petals linear-oblong, 5–7 mm long, ± 1 mm wide.. Androgynophore ± 0.5 mm long, glabrous, pubescent at the apex but not produced.. Stamens 4–6 mm long.. Ovary ± 1 mm long, densely hairy; style 3.5–6 mm long.. Fruit (1–)4-lobed, 9–12 mm wide, lobes obovoid, 6–7 mm long, 5–6 mm wide, green when young, scattered with a few short hairs with a small wart at their base.. Fig. 3/6 (leaf, p. 9).
