Characteristics

Shrub to 2.5 m tall, often flowering when leafless.. Leaves oblong-elliptic to obovate, 2–4.2(–6.5) cm long, 1–2.1(–3.4) cm wide, rounded to ± truncate at the apex, rounded at the base, margin coarsely serrate and often appearing slightly thickened, coriaceous, sparsely pubescent to greyish tomentellous above, greyish tomentellous beneath; petiole 1–3 mm long.. Inflorescence a solitary subsessile flower, the pedicel extending up to 4 mm in fruit, with 3 small persistent bracts at the base.. Flowers pink to lilac; sepals 10–14 mm long; petals ovate to lanceolate, 5–8 mm long, 1–2.5 mm wide, acute at the apex.. Androgynophore glabrous for 1–2 mm at the base, pubescent and produced for ± 1 mm above the node.. Stamens 7–9 mm long; filaments pink; anthers yellow.. Ovary ± 1.5 mm long, densely hairy; style 7–9 mm long.. Fruit (1–)4-lobed, 14–20 mm wide, the lobes 8–11 mm long, 7–10 mm wide, orange, sparsely hairy.. Fig. 3/7 (leaf, p. 9).
