Characteristics

Decumbent herb to 10 cm tall forming extensive mats. Leaves alternate, crowded at stem apex; lamina cordate to ovate or oblong, serrate, 20–30 mm long and wide, conspicuously ribbed below; petiole 2.5–4 cm long. Male spikes to 10 cm long, interrupted; flowers subtended by a bract and 2 bracteoles; stamens usually 1 or 2; anthers oblong, 1.4–1.5 mm long, shortly apiculate. Female spikes capitate, almost sessile; flowers lacking bracts and bracteoles; petals 2, unequal, subulate, alternating with sepals; sepals 2, minute, deltoid, sometimes absent; styles subulate, 2 mm long, fused at base; ovary ovoid, slightly compressed, ribbed. Drupe globular to obovoid, c. 5 mm long, red.
