Characteristics

Leaves opposite, becoming alternate on upper stem and branches, sessile, 2–8 x 0.1–0.4 cm., linear, mucronate at the apex, widening somewhat and subauriculate at the base, at least in the upper leaves, ± revolute; upper surface sparsely weakly pilose to scabridulous, the hairs long-stalked T-shaped becoming rigid, lower surface whitish or silvery araneose-felted with short-stalked matted T-shaped hairs.

Phyllaries many, membranous-scarious with broad somewhat hyaline margins, shortly acuminate to tapering pungent, often purple-tipped, finely lanate-pilose to glabrescent, the outer from c. 3 mm. long, subulate-lanceolate, the inner to c. 5.5 mm. long, narrowly oblong-lanceolate.
Stems sparingly to much branched, densely to sparsely softly appressed-puberulous, leafy often densely so with new shoots in leaf axils; indumentum of long-armed, T-shaped hairs.
Achenes polished brown, 1.0–1.5 mm. long, obovoid-oblong, faintly 4-angled, glabrous or sometimes glandular near the base; pappus 0.
Capitula small, numerous, somewhat clustered; capitula stalks mostly 3–35 mm. long.
Corollas purple, 5–6.5 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, puberulous.
An erect slender to bushy annual herb, 30–60 cm. tall.
