Phyllaries many, green, membranous with scarious or subhyaline margins, lanceolate, shortly acuminate-pungent or tapering to a bristle-tipped apex, finely araneose-pilose outside, the outer from c. 1 mm. long, the inner to c. 6 mm. long.
Stems sparsely to much branched, leafy, softly appressed-puberulous; branches to c. 40 cm. long, ± widely spreading; axils of mature leaves often with whorls of young leaves; indumentum of long-armed T-shaped hairs.
Achenes brown, c. 1.5 mm. long, broadly obovoid-turbinate, somewhat 2–3-sided, appressed setulose at the apex and base, glabrous about the middle; pappus 0.
Capitula numerous, small, ± laxly arranged or loosely clustered; stalks mostly 1–5 mm. long, from slender branchlets to c. 2 cm. long.
Corollas purple to pale-mauve, 3–5 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, appressed pilose-puberulous.
Involucres 3–6 x 3–6 mm., campanulate-cyathiform to somewhat spreading.
An erect slender to bushy annual herb, 7–80 cm. tall.
