Phyllaries many, scarious, acuminate-pungent or bristle-tipped, margins somewhat hyaline, finely araneose-pilose to glabrescent, the outer phyllaries from c. 3 mm. long, subulate-lanceolate, the inner to c. 5.5 mm. long, oblong-lanceolate.
Stems sparingly-to much-branched, softly appressed-puberulous, leafy with the leaves sometimes crowded below; indumentum of short-stalked long-armed T-shaped hairs; branches to c. 30 cm. long, slender.
Capitula small, few to numerous, short-stalked, in 2–12-capitulate clusters, or terminal on short branches; stalks mostly 1–3 mm. long from slender spreading branchlets 1–6 cm. long.
Achenes polished-brown, 1.0–1.5 mm. long, obovoid-turbinbate, usually 3-angled, glabrous; pappus 0.
An erect slender to bushy, often tufted, annual or perennial herb to c. 45 cm. tall.
Corollas purple or mauve, 4.5–6 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, araneose-pilose.
