Characteristics

Leaves in whorls of 3, or opposite, sessile, up to c. 2.5 x 0.1 cm., linear, tapering to a pungent acuminate apex, with somewhat revolute margins, upper surface green and thinly pilose, lower surface closely white araneose-felted, midrib glabrescent.

Phyllaries many, lanceolate, tapering to a purple pungent tip, midrib prominent, densely araneose-lanate outside; the outer phyllaries from c. 2 mm. long, narrowly lanceolate, the inner to c. 6 mm. long.
Corollas pale-mauve, to c. 6.5 mm. long, narrowly funnel-shaped, silky-whitish appressed-pilose in upper part, the hairs finely long-armed T-shaped.
Stems annual, ascending, up to c. 20 cm. long, thinly white appressed-araneose; hairs short-stalked long-armed matted T-shaped.
Achene (immature) c. 1 mm. long, ?narrowly obovoid, ?4-ribbed, sparsely setulose, minutely glandular; pappus 0.
Capitula in terminal clusters of 2–6; stalks 1–30 mm. long, appressed whitish pilose.
A tufted perennial herb from a woody rootstock.
